Funicular railways, APM cabins, and inclined lifts
Leveraging its vast experience in cable transportation, Sigma manufactures and renovates APMs and funicular railways.
These public transport systems can be either automated or manually operated, and are developed using three distinct technologies: air cushion, tire track, and rails.
Cabins can be constructed from aluminum and/or composite materials and are designed to carry anywhere from 12 to 440 passengers.
Sigma made its first foray into APMs in 2012 with a project for Cairo Airport in Egypt. This eye-catching design consists of two automatic, driverless train shuttles, each with a capacity of 250 passengers. Since then, Sigma has extended its APM operations to various locations including Mendola and Pisa in Italy, Shenzhen and Enshi in China, Miami in the USA, and Serfaus in Austria.
In 2019 and 2020, Sigma unveiled two new funicular systems: the first connecting Bourg Saint Maurice to Les Arcs, and the second leading to the Tibidabo theme park. Both funiculars offer passengers exceptional comfort and stunning panoramic vistas.
An inclined lift, another form of guided transportation, features a single car operating on a straight, sloped track. Typically of modest length, the car is pulled by one or more cables originating from the higher terminal station. Our inclined lifts are entirely automatic and run 24/7, ensuring top performance and an excellent level of service both for users and operators.
